How Many Camera Channels Can an RK3588 NVR Handle? Hardware Guide
The RK3588's 8K@60 hardware decoder and 6 TOPS NPU make it a popular choice for mid-to-high-end NVRs and monitoring all-in-ones. But "how many channels?" has no single answer — it depends on resolution, AI load and display needs.
Channel Reference (H.265 decode)
| Scenario | Recommended channels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4MP intake + local playback | 32 ch | Ample decode headroom, 4K HDMI output at the same time |
| 4MP intake + human/plate AI | 16–24 ch | NPU and decoder share the load; reserve headroom |
| 2MP intake (lightweight) | 48–64 ch | Use 8GB RAM + dual GbE to split traffic |
| 8K video wall | 16 ch + 8K output | A unique RK3588 strength — replaces a decode matrix |
Hardware Configuration Tips
- Memory: 8GB LPDDR4X minimum for 32×4MP; 16GB with AI analytics or 64 channels;
- Storage: native SATA3.0 + PCIe3.0 supports dual-bay expansion; use surveillance-grade HDDs;
- Networking: dual GbE is standard — one port to the camera switch, one to the platform uplink;
- Cooling: sustained multi-channel decode draws about 8–12W; metal housing with an aluminum heatsink suffices — no fan needed.
RK3588 or HiSilicon Hi3536?
HiSilicon Hi3536/Hi3531 has a mature ecosystem and excellent per-channel economics for traditional embedded NVRs; RK3588 wins on Android ecosystem (installable apps), large-screen output and AI compute. If your NVR runs its own Android apps, does edge AI or drives 8K displays, RK3588 is the better fit; for pure recording/storage boxes, compare HiSilicon quotes as well.
