IP Camera (IPC) Customization: From Requirements to Mass Production

For a first-time IPC (network camera) product, the two most common questions are: what is the process, and how long does it take? Here is how we break it down at Hongyin Tech, based on real project schedules.

Stage 1: Requirement Review (3–5 days)

Define form factor (bullet/turret/battery), resolution (2MP–8MP), AI features (human/vehicle/perimeter), storage & connectivity (SD card/cloud/4G) and target cost. Deliverables: a requirement spec and hardware selection sheet (HiSilicon Hi3516/Hi3519 or Rockchip RK3568/RV1126 platform).

Stage 2: Hardware & Enclosure Design (2–4 weeks)

Stage 3: Firmware & Algorithm Development (3–6 weeks)

ISP tuning (night vision/WDR/defog), encoding and network protocols (RTSP/ONVIF/GB28181), AI model deployment and false-alarm optimization. Usually runs in parallel with EVT bring-up.

Stage 4: App & Cloud Integration (2–4 weeks)

Integration with your own app or third-party platforms (Tuya/Tencent Cloud), or a private cloud per your requirements. Push notifications, sharing, playback and OTA all land in this stage.

Stage 5: Testing & Certification (2–4 weeks)

Thermal cycling, drop and long-duration recording stability tests; CCC/SRRC (wireless)/CE/FCC if you plan to sell on e-commerce platforms.

Stage 6: Pilot Run & Mass Production (2–3 weeks)

DVT pilot run to validate yield → process fixes → MP. Overall, expect 3–5 months from kickoff to first mass production (2.5–3 months with stock molds and proven platforms).

Three Tips for First-Time IPC Builders

  1. Lock the app and cloud platform during requirement review — otherwise firmware gets reworked;
  2. Ship a "good enough" AI feature set first, then iterate via OTA;
  3. Choose a provider with proven ONVIF/GB28181 stacks — it saves 3–4 weeks of protocol debugging.
